So while it will close "my" connections it will not close the myriad connections from the various applications, ETL, users, etc. It is a client side setting and does not apply to the server. The check box "Disconnect after the query executes" in the SSMS dialog only applies to SSMS connections opened under the particular profile. I think if the tip would have been titled "Disconnecting SQL Server Connections after Query Execution from SSMS", it would have been more clearer. Nowhere in the tip it says that application queries will be disconnected. The entire context of the query execution and disconnecting the connection is limited to the scope of SSMS. By application wide, it means "SSMS" as an application, and not client applications that consume data from SQL Server. ![]() I think you have mis-interpreted the meaning of "application wide setting". The launch of ByteDance’s payment service comes on the heels of state-run broadcaster CCTV dropping Pinduoduo as a key partner for its Chinese New Year gala, which has an audience of 1.2 billion people, for Douyin, Chinese media have reported. While unlisted ByteDance does not disclose sales figures, major rival Kuaishou Technology, which is seeking an IPO in Hong Kong, saw e-commerce transactions reached RMB 94.5 billion (USD 14.6 billion) in the third quarter last year, which nearly equaled sales for the first six months of the year. ByteDance, which so far counts advertising as its major revenue source, set up a separate business unit for e-commerce in June, and it has invested heavily to lure popular livestream hosts to its platform. Online shopping in China shot up last year during the coronavirus pandemic, and brands are increasingly tapping into livestreaming to sell products. We resist because of our artificial need for precision. This “imperfect” model is fast enough to trick our brain into seeing fluid motion. Video shows still images at 24 times per second. Can you tell a handwritten note from a high-quality printout of the same? But can you tell the difference between a high-quality mp3 and a person talking in the other room?Ĭomputer printouts are made from individual dots too small to see. We’re tricked by “imperfect but useful” models all the time:Īudio files don’t contain all the information of the original signal. We might know the model is jagged, but we can’t tell the difference - any test we do shows the model and the real item as the same. The trick to both approaches is that the simpler model was built beyond our level of accuracy. Infinitesimals build the model in another dimension, and it looks perfectly accurate in ours. ![]() Limits stay in our dimension, but with ‘just enough’ accuracy to maintain the illusion of a perfect model. To you, the rectangular shape I made at the sub-atomic level is the most perfect curve you’ve ever seen.” It’s like getting to the imaginary plane from the real one - you just can’t do it. The precision is totally beyond your reach - I’m at the sub-atomic level, and you’re a caveman who can barely walk and chew gum. Infinitesimals: “Forget accuracy: there’s an entire infinitely small dimension where I’ll make the curve. Oh, you have a millimeter ruler, do you? I’ll draw the curve in nanometers. What’s the smallest unit on your ruler? Inches? Fine, I’ll draw you a staircasey curve at the millimeter level and you’ll never know. Limits: “Give me your error margin (I know you have one, you limited, imperfect human!), and I’ll draw you a curve. ![]() Let’s see how each approach would break a curve into rectangles: These approaches bridge the gap between “zero to us” and “nonzero at a greater level of accuracy”. You see, there are two answers (so far!) to the “be zero and not zero” paradox:Īllow another dimension: Numbers measured to be zero in our dimension might actually be small but nonzero in another dimension (infinitesimal approach - a dimension infinitely smaller than the one we deal with)Īccept imperfection: Numbers measured to be zero are probably nonzero at a greater level of accuracy saying something is “zero” really means “it’s 0 +/- our measurement error” (limit approach) But an atomic measurement would show some mass change due to sweat evaporation, exhalation, etc. Here’s a different brain bender: did your weight change by zero pounds while reading this sentence? Yes, by any scale you have nearby. Where else would a purely imaginary number go? (How far East is due North?) Well, “i” sure looks like zero when we’re on the real number line: the “real part” of i, Re(i), is indeed 0. Is “0 + i”, a purely imaginary number, the same as zero? The notion of zero is biased by our expectations. A dilemma is at hand! The Solution: Zero is Relative We want the best of both: slices so thin we can’t see them (for an accurate model) and slices thick enough to create a simpler, easier-to-analyze model. We see that our model is a jagged approximation, and won’t be accurate. If the slices are tiny but measurable, the illusion vanishes. Now there’s no benefit - the ‘simple’ model is just as complex as the original! Additionally, adding up zero-width slices won’t get us anywhere. If the slices are too small to notice (zero width), then the model appears identical to the original shape (we don’t see any rectangles!). The Paradox of Zeroīreaking a curve into rectangles has a problem: How do we get slices so thin we don’t notice them, but large enough to “exist”? Limits and infinitesimals help us create models that are simple to use, yet share the same properties as the original item (length, area, etc.). The tricky part is making a decent model. The simpler model, built from rectangles, is easier to analyze than dealing with the complex, amorphous blob directly. The thinner the rectangles, the more accurate the model. ![]() We can break a complex idea (a wiggly curve) into simpler parts (rectangles):īut, we want an accurate model. So many math courses jump into limits, infinitesimals and Very Small Numbers (TM) without any context. We see this uncertainty as linked to the Saudi cuts. Russia has indicated at various times that it could cut production as low as 9.3 million barrels per day for varying timeframes. The OPEC+ quota is currently 9.828 million barrels per day. Next, OPEC+ openly acknowledged the uncertainty over the amount of production that Russia is supplying the market presently. In contrast, the UAE's quota was upped about 200,000 barrels per day, more closely hewing to actual production levels. The reduced quotas more closely align actual production with quotas, meaning future production announcements will be more closely linked to actual production changes versus us having to interpret the level of shadow barrels. All four countries had been unable to meet their quotas for some time due to political, investment, or reservoir-related challenges. In a move that demonstrates Saudi Arabia's growing consolidation of influence within the cartel, several OPEC members including Angola, Congo, Nigeria, and Guinea had their baseline quotas reduced by a total of about 625,000 barrels per day. OPEC+ is also somewhat emboldened to cut production knowing that U.S. Essentially, the cut and extension threats are widening the gap further in what we already saw as an undersupplied oil market in the second half of 2023 from our April observations. Comments from Saudi Arabia ahead of the meeting have been unusually pointed and focused heavily on prices and oil short sellers, indicating in our view, the country is under growing pressure to keep prices high (above $80 a barrel) to ensure enough revenue to fund planned social spending over the next few years. Thus, the decline in price has likely frustrated the Saudis. At the time, we felt, as likely OPEC+ did, that the cuts would be enough to support higher oil prices in the near term with a potential spike to $100 a barrel remaining a possibility in the second half of the year. Brent prices have fallen about 10% since the start of April to about $76 a barrel currently. With the earlier cuts only beginning in May and having a limited impact so far, we see the latest announcement more about defending oil prices with the threat of further production cut extensions. We'd flag Equitrans and ExxonMobil as undervalued. oil and gas coverage are unchanged following the announcement. Our fair value estimates and moat ratings for our U.S. The previously announced 1.6 million barrels per day cut (or about 600,000-700,000 barrels per day allowing for quota underproduction) by OPEC cut in April has now been extended through the end of 2024 from through the end of 2023. Saudi Arabia would cut 1 million barrels per day production cut in July 2023 for one month, though it can be extended, which we consider a realistic cut, while the remaining 400,000 net barrels are aligning quotas to actual production levels, and we'd consider paper barrels. On June 4, OPEC+ announced about 1.4 million barrels per day of production cuts.
